They’re Already Here!!!!

Deadly Movies Cameos | Kevin McCarthy in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Dir Philip Kaufman

This is one of my all-time favourite cameos, and highlights how you can use cameos to aid the narrative as well as providing something for fans to look out for. Kevin McCarthy’s appearance in the remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is a spine tingling good cameo. McCarthy was the lead in the original and seminal 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, which ended (before the silly reshoot happy ending) with McCarthy running down a busy highway warning drivers that ‘something terrible had happened‘ and (address the camera and audience directly) ‘they’re already here!’ A fantastic ending that really highlighted the 50s Cold War paranoia of American identity being infiltrated by the red threat of Communism.

Fast forward to 1978 and new lead man Donald Sutherland is driving through the busy streets of San Francisco when a terrified middle age chap runs into his car, banging on the window and screaming, you guessed it, ‘something terrible had happened…, they’re already here!’ The man is, or course, McCarthy, wearing a very similar suit and tie as he wore back in 1956. You have to love the implication that poor old Kevin McCarthy has been running the highways and byways of the West Coast for 22 years warning motorists of the impending alien invasion. It’s a great cameo that fits the tone of the film perfectly, whilst being a great nod to fans and a permanent link to the original.

Cameo timed at 27.39 mins approximately
