Countdown to Halloween, Day 6: Unsung Heroes of Horror. Beast The Dog In The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 (1984)

Mutant redneck’s beware, kill Beauty and the Beast is coming to savage your sorry hillbilly ass. In 1984 Wes Craven walked into cinematic territory that no other filmmaker had dared go before or after; live-action film’s first ever dog flashback. That’s right, In perhaps the worst ever example of sloppy and outright lazy exposition, Craven has the actual balls to show flashback footage to his 1977 original via the memory of surviving dog Beast. It’s genuinely one of the stupidest moments in horror history, and cements Beast as the dog with the most cinematic memory of all time.

A stalwart entry, my friend. But… this isn’t the first film in which a dog’s memory serves as a flashback. In fact, it’s not even the first horror film. As I pointed out in my recent review of ZOLTAN: HOUND OF DRACULA, the titular canine there has a dream that serves as a flashback. That movie hit theatres in 1978, preceding Craven’s ludicrous sequel by 6 years.
