Character actor and forehead connoisseur Kevin J. O’Connor’s 1998 turn as comic relief Joey in Steven Sommer’s Deep Rising is surprisingly fun. In a movie full to bursting point with posturing meat-heads O’Conner is a necessary time-out. Sommer’s must have been especially pleased with him as he cast O’Conner is similar type sidekick roles in every (bad and mediocre) movie he subsequently made (including cinema’s ultimate sidekick Igor in the loathsome Van Helsing). But It’s in this, the 90s best American movie (oh yes I said it and stand by it), O’Conner is on file fettle, quipping and nervously zinging his way through 100 minutes of the most underrated and misunderstood b-movies of modern times.
