The Oscars are upon us once again, and there’s little surprise that there’s little surprises. As always any surprises come in the form of omissions. But at Deadly Movies HQ we like to avoid the self indulgence of Oscar porn and have our very own alternative Oscar nominations list. Now this is only an exercise in personal indulgence with a pinch of facetiousness so please don’t bang on at me about what is and isn’t a horror movie or what is and what isn’t a pile of dog crap. Of course feel free to pick your winners and losers from the nominations below.
NOTE: These are films whose wider release in theatres or on DVD occurred in 2011.

Here are my picks…
Best Picture (The Academy chose 9 movies for this -random! – so I’ll do the same)
Attack the Block
Best Director
David Fincher – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Best Actress
Rooney Mara – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Best Actor
Colin Farrell – Fright Night (I found this performance incredilly enjoyable)
Best Supporting Actress
Johanna Mørck – Troll Hunter (it’s the only one I’ve seen!)
Best Supporting Actor
Andy Serkis – Rise of the Apes
Best Foreign Film
I Saw The Devil (Korea). I love my Korean revenge movies, but I found this one so harrowing I’m not sure if I’ll ever give it a second viewing. Similar to ‘Requiem for a Dream’ in the way it left me with a sick feeling in my gut and the want to just curl up into the foetul position.
Best Cinematography
I Saw The Devil – Mogae Lee. The shot where Min-sik Choi goes stab happy in the taxi was absoloutely phenomenal.
Best Visual Effects
Rise of the Apes
Best Make-up
Attack The Block (again, only one I’d seen).
Much love New-Man x
